Empty Shoes, Difficult Steps is a collective existing of a psychology student, an anthropology teacher, and two creative industries master graduates. With this collective we try to decolonise knowledge by using co-creative methods. This collective sprung from the Nijmegen for Palestine Encampment at Radboud University. With our first project, Empty Shoes, we tried to let people embody knowledge instead of keeping to throw numbers at them. We hoped to find each other in our humanity and shared experiences. With over 450 pairs of children’s shoes, we created a line from the encampment to the CVB (College van Bestuur). Not only to confront the board, but also to remind ourselves why we were doing what we were doing. For a lot of people, either involved in the encampment or passing by, the shoes were the most impactful. This project advocates for visual representation.
